Summer hockey is well underway for the next wave of hockey’s elite talent.
The World Junior Summer Showcase has begun in Windsor, Ontario, where hockey’s top prospects will have a chance to demonstrate their skills before the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will take place later this year. From July 26th to August 1st, this event is an integral part of each nation’s selection process for the WJC teams of Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States.
This upcoming World Juniors will go from Dec. 26, 2026, through Jan. 5, 2027, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
Sunday, July 26, 2026: Finland def. USA White 4-1 & USA Blue def. Sweden 6-1
22 seconds into the first game of the event, Finland’s Jeremi Virtanen opened the scoring, with Aapo Vanninen, Aapo Katavisto and Jere Somervuori piling on the goals to solidify a four-goal cushion in the first period. On the other end, the U.S. lone goal scorer was Brent Solomon (DET-2025-4th), whose shot was the only one of 26 attempted by the Americans to get by Finland’s netminder Jester Rossi, who ended the game with a .962 save percentage and as Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff wrote, he had amazing tracking despite his size in the net.
The Blue team for the United States fared much better piling on six goals. Carter Sanderson (PIT-2025-6th) registered a hat-trick to go along with Ethan Wyttenbach‘s (CGY-2025-5th) three assists, who was the NCAA’s top scorer last season. Wyatt Cullen (NSH-2026-1st) and Brooks Rogowski (VAN-2026-2nd) also had two-point outings, both scoring a goal and an assist each.
Sweden’s lone goal came from Theo Stockselius (CGY-2025-2nd), who according to Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff, demonstrated a very strong game.
Today, USA Blue will face off against Finland at 3 p.m. ET and USA White will play Sweden at 7 p.m. ET.
Team Canada announces its WJSS roster
The Canadians won’t play a game until this Wednesday, the 29th, but we have an idea of what their roster looks like for this event. Canada is holding four goaltenders, 10 defensemen, and 18 forwards for three games against the Swedes on July 29, Finland on July 30, and the United States on Aug. 1.
They have eight returning players from the 2026 World Juniors roster eligible to make this upcoming roster, including Carson Carels (CGY-2026-1st), Braeden Cootes (VAN-2025-1st), Caleb Desnoyers (UTA-2025-1st), Jack Ivankovic (NSH-2025-2nd), Brady Martin (NSH-2025-1st), Cameron Reid (2025-NSH-1st), Cole Reschny (CGY-2025-1st), and Keaton Verhoeff (SJS-2026-1st).
Landon DuPont, a 2027 top prospect eligible to be taken in this upcoming NHL Draft will not join the Canadians at this event and will instead play for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup instead, per Hockey Canada’s press release.
