The Boston Bruins are making some more changes at the top.

Jeremy Jacobs announced that his son, Charlie Jacobs, will succeed him as governor of the Boston Bruins, effective immediately. Jeremy spent 51 years as the governor, the longest-tenured in franchise history.

He served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors for 19 years.

Charlie will represent the Bruins on the NHL’s Board of Governors. He has been the team’s alternate governor for the last 26 years.

“I’m incredibly proud to celebrate the transition of governorship to my son, Charlie. He’s the day-to-day leader of the club, the public face of ownership and an active participant on the Board of Governors as an alternate governor, so this is a natural step in our succession plan,” Jeremy Jacobs said in a statement.

“Charlie has my full confidence, and I’m especially proud that our family will continue its stewardship of the Boston Bruins.”

Jeremy stepped down as the Chairman of the NHL’s Board of Governors ahead of the 2026-27 season. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis succeeded him after the board unanimously elected him to the position.

Jeremy purchased the team in 1975, and in 2017, he became the sixth member of the Bruins inducted to the builder’s category of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Charlie Jacobs became CEO of the Bruins in 2015, and in a 2019 interview, Jeremy said he passed along ownership to Charlie and his five siblings.

During his tenure as CEO, Charlie has overseen several major projects, including renovations to TD Garden and the development of The Hub on Causeway. He also founded the Boston Bruins Foundation in 2003 and continues to serve as its chairman.

“It is a tremendous honor to step into the role as governor of the Boston Bruins, representing the team that has been part of my family for the past 51 years,” Charlie Jacobs said in a statement. “I step into this role with the goal of continuing to build upon the incredible legacy and the impact that my dad has had on this franchise and the NHL over his five decades of leadership.

Dad will continue to serve as my mentor and sounding board through this next era of the Bruins.”

He will continue to serve as CEO of the Boston Bruins and Delaware North. He shares the Delaware North role with brothers Jerry Jr. and Lou.

“Jeremy Jacobs’ dedication to the Bruins, the League, and the Boston community has been remarkable, and his leadership has left a lasting mark on our sport,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. “After more than two decades as an Alternate Governor, Charlie is superbly prepared for this moment, and fans can be confident about the Bruins prospects under his leadership.”
