Veteran forward Tomas Nosek has signed a contract with HC Dynamo Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga. The move indicates that the 33-year-old’s NHL career, which spans 11 years and 514 games, has most likely come to an end.
Nosek’s North American pro career began in the summer of 2014, when he was signed to an entry-level contract by the Detroit Red Wings. At the time, he was an undrafted player who arrived in the Red Wings organization as an unrestricted free agent prospect. He had been playing for Dynamo Pardubice in 2013-14, and attracted NHL interest after a breakout 19-goal, 44-point season.
The year prior, Nosek had scored just five goals and 14 points.
Nosek’s experience as a top-six scorer in a quality European league allowed him to make a smooth transition to the North American game. As a rookie in the AHL during the 2014-15 campaign, Nosek scored 11 goals and 34 points, and added seven points in 12 playoff games.
He kept up that level of production the following year, before taking a real leap forward in 2016-17. That year, he scored 15 goals and 41 points in 51 regular season games, 10 goals and 22 points in 19 playoff games, and won the Calder Cup with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The combination of Nosek’s rapid development in the AHL, his clutch performances in the playoffs, and his positional value as a 6’3″ center made Nosek a coveted commodity in that summer’s expansion draft.
The Vegas Golden Knights ultimately passed on other options such as goaltender Petr Mrazek (who posted a .921 save percentage as Detroit’s No. 1 goalie the year prior) to select Nosek.
Like so many of Vegas’ decisions in the expansion draft, their choice to select Nosek (who had just 17 games of NHL experience with Detroit) paid off.
He was a regular bottom-sixer for the team during their inaugural campaign, skating regularly on the team’s penalty kill. He scored 15 points in 67 regular-season games, and added four goals and six points in 17 playoff games as the team made a stunning run to the Stanley Cup Final.
For the next three years, Nosek was a consistent face in Vegas’ bottom-six, earning steady usage on the penalty kill and capably winning more than 50% of his draws when called upon at the faceoff dot. His reliability as a fourth-line forward earned Nosek interest from across the league, and he ultimately signed with the Boston Bruins in 2021 as an unrestricted free agent.
In his two seasons with the Bruins, the team was remarkably successful, going 116-38-10. Nosek himself scored 35 points across those two years and won 56.4% of his draws. Nosek then left as a free agent, and after an injury-plagued 2023-24 season with the New Jersey Devils, he signed a league-minimum deal with the Florida Panthers.
He would end up playing in 16 games during the team’s 2025 playoff run, and won the Stanley Cup.
This past season, Nosek scored six points in 34 games, missing extensive time as the result of both a significant knee injury, and a broken leg.
While Nosek was never more than a bottom-six player in his NHL career, he was a thoroughly reliable one. Nosek’s teams were almost always successful. Remarkably, over his first 11 years in pro hockey, stretching back to his rookie year in Czechia, Nosek’s teams never missed the playoffs.
Now, he’ll return to where his pro career started and help Pardubice defend their Extraliga title.
