The Red Wings new-format prospect tournament has officially come to a close, with the Red Wings rookies winning two out of three matchups over the past week. The rooks have put on quite a show, with standout performances from Carter Bear and Dylan James.
With the conclusion of the rookie tourney, the Red Wings have a brief respite before the vets move in and training camp begins on the Sep. 17th.
The team certainly has a lot to prepare for after a tumultuous offseason and the imminent arrival of now-former captain Dylan Larkin and the rest of the roster to Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings will certainly have some intriguing names to watch for the open roster spots, including some of the aforementioned standouts from the rookie tourney. Helping those decisions along should be newly-officially minted Detroit interim general manager Shawn Horcoff.

Horcoff has been the Red Wings assistant general manager for the past several years and had sort of been unofficially serving in the capacity of interim manager since Steve Yzerman’s resignation from the role in July. Chris Ilitch and the rest of the Red Wings organization will continue to search for a new, permanent GM, but for the start of the season at least, Horcoff is the man in charge, and his name is still in the hat.
Ilitch has given Horcoff the reins and left the door open for him to hold the position permanently depending on how the year goes.

Former Michigan State netminder Trey Augustine was in net for both of the Red Wings rookie prospect tourney victories. Two of Detroit’s prospect games went to overtime, and Augustine was perfect in the extra frame and the shootout for the Red Wings.
Augustine is set to start the season with Grand Rapids behind Michal Postava, though how many starts the young netminder will get is yet to be seen. The Red Wings have always been slow to develop their netminders, but Augustine has made a case for himself after his Mike Richter Award-winning season to fast-track that development path.
