It’s officially past Labor Day, and the Detroit Red Wings still have no general manager or president of hockey ops in place. The team received word yesterday that Jeff Greenberg, current general manager of the Detroit Tigers was removing his name from contention and reaffirmed his commitment to the Tigers organization.

55 years ago today, the iconic Mr. Hockey retired for the first time.
Gordie Howe spent the vast majority of his extensive pro hockey career with the Red Wings and has obviously become synonymous with both the team and the city, as evidenced by the recently completed Gordie Howe Bridge that connects the US and Canada.
Howe’s first retirement only lasted two years, and he would go on to play in the WHA with his sons, Mark and Marty, until the league merged with the NHL. The elder Howe played one final season with the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80.
