The Daily: Horcoff Still Interim-GM; Draft Stays Away

Yesterday was one of the last pre-season meetings between the National Hockey League’s assorted general managers and head coaches. The 32 teams and their top executives sat down in their respective home offices to discuss a variety of matters over Zoom, though there was of course, one notable exception.

The Red Wings, for the moment without an official title-holder, had interim GM Shawn Horcoff representing Detroit. Horcoff has previously been named as one of the contenders for the Red Wings GM job, though no word has passed on if the team has made any final decisions in the process, with several external candidates not yet eliminated from contention.

The rumored Labor Day deadline has come and gone, with the only news being that Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg had removed his name from contention in the process.

Presumably current Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan attended the meetings, though the coach has not made a public appearance since the end of season media sessions.

At the meetings the League decided on a variety of issues and confirmed to outside sources that the NHL Entry Draft will continue to stay decentralized. The last centralized draft to gather the entire league to make their selections was 2024, with Macklin Celebrini going first overall to the San Jose Sharks in Las Vegas.

The league next meets on Sep. 22, just after preseason starts.

With the days dragging on, it seems increasingly likely that the Red Wings may not have their next top executive in place in time for camp.

Red Wings prospect Eddie Genborg is recovering nicely from his undisclosed injury from earlier this year. The young Swedish heavy hitter has played in the last two preseason games for Timra IK after missing part of training camp with the club.

Genborg played briefly with the Grand Rapids Griffins at the end of last season before the injury, and could rejoin them more permanently at the end of this year.
