The Daily: Genborg Appears Fit for Duty; Max Plante Named Captain

Prospect Eddie Genborg reportedly looked like himself in a Swedish Hockey League preseason game, and that constitutes news in this bizarre summer of Detroit Red Wings discontent.

Genborg has been recovering from an undisclosed injury suffered in the AHL playoffs. The expectation was that he would be ready to play for Timra IK by the start of the SHL regular season on Sept.

19. His preseason appearance confirms his readiness.

He is not attending Detroit’s training camp.

It is impossible to know what the new director of hockey operations, whenever he is named, thinks about Detroit’s collection of prospects.

But what fans who follow Detroit prospects know is that Genborg is an important prospect because he offers a physical presence. He’s miserable to play against.

The Red Wings’ most pressing need is goal scoring. Genborg doesn’t project to be a top-line scorer.

But what Genborg can do is help the Red Wings change the culture to be a tougher, more physical team. Isn’t that a change Detroit fans have been hoping to see?

With Genborg, Marco Kasper, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Carter Mazur, Emmitt Finnie, and Anton Johansson, the Red Wings have a stable of players who like to hit. These guys all have a pushback mentality.

But all of that is less important if the Red Wings cannot find more scoring.

As if the Red Wings didn’t already have multiple reasons to appreciate Max Plante, he continues to add to the pile.
