It’s the beginning of August, which means its the slowest time of the year for the hockey world as the NHL and leagues around the world begin preparations for training camp to start near the beginning of September. Still, the show goes on, and the hockey rumor mill is stirring the pot to see what surfaces.
Dylan Larkin, who publicly requested a trade from the Red Wings now over three months ago, is still the best player technically available on the market. As training camp nears it is increasingly apparent that the Red Wings’ top center isn’t going anywhere without a significant return of assets.
Unfortunately for Larkin, none of the teams on his shortlist have an abundance of assets to get him for.
That leaves only the option of getting a third team involved, which begs the question at this stage of the year, with rosters mostly already set for the coming season, who is willing to disrupt their summer’s work to help someone else get Larkin?
It’s a tall ask for any GM, though some teams
While the World Junior Summer Showcase has wrapped up, the hockey world has already moved on to the next torunament for the next generation of players. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup began yesterday, giving the participating countries the opportunity to show off their best U18 players.
The best on best tournament will give some of next year’s draft eligible players and opportunity to really show off their skills and make a case for the IIHF Championship later this year. The Red Wings would do well to keep their eyes well trained on the games happening across the border, as they’ll likely have a high draft pick.
