Matthew Schaefer continues to raise the bar in his second NHL season.

The 19-year-old defenceman played all five minutes in overtime as the New York Islanders won 4-3 in a shootout over the Nashville Predators.

Schaefer is the first player to not take a shift off in an overtime period since the NHL began tracking that data in 2009-10. He finished the game with 32:16 of ice time, the third most by any player in a game this season, and picked up an assist.

The reigning Calder Trophy winner has once again anchored the Islanders through the first month of the season. He now has 11 points in 12 games while averaging 26:43 of ice time, fourth most league-wide.

The assist extended his personal point streak to five games.

Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat scored in the shootout as the Islanders salvaged a win after letting an early lead slip away.

Horvat, Anthony Duclair and Brayden Schenn had staked the Islanders to a 3-0 lead in regulation but the Predators forced overtime with goals from Filip Forsberg, Alexander Kerfoot and Ryan O'Reilly.

Semyon Varlamov got the win for the Islanders, his first win in nearly two years.
