Red Wings Fall To Penguins On Draper Own Goal

DETROIT — One night, you score the shootout winner for the Detroit Red Wings, and you’re the hero. The next night, you accidentally kick the puck past your own goalie for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ game-winning goal.

That was Kienan Draper’s reality. The son of Red Wings assistant GM and director of amateur scouting Kris Draper was the hero of Saturday’s 4-3 shootout win over Dallas.

Sunday, a centering pass from Pittsburgh’s Jordan Charron banked off Draper’s skates past Wings goalie Michal Orsulak, giving the Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Detroit rookies.

Theo Rochette scored for the Red Wings on the first shift of the game. Defenseman Jacob Truscott and Adam Levac also scored.

Also tallying for the Penguins were Carter Sanderson, Brayden Edwards, and Tomas Galvas.

With the score tied 3-3 late in the second period, Detroit was about to be afforded a 5-on-3 power play for 1:46. However, Red Wings Jesse Kiiskinen got involved in a post-whistle scuffle and was assessed a minor penalty for roughing, wiping out the two-man advantage.

The Red Wings were 1-for-8 on the power play in the loss.

“Yeah, I mean, we didn’t do very well on them,” coach Dan Watson said. “I think our guys got tired one right after the other.

You have two units, you try to switch them up. But I think the execution just overall in our power play wasn’t very good.”

The Detroit rookies get Monday off. Then the tournament wraps up Tuesday when the Red Wings play the Columbus Blue Jackets rookies at 2 p.m.
