Kienan Draper Pots Game Winner In Prospect Tourney Shoot-Out

DETROIT — Trey Augustine showed what the fuss is all about, making eight consecutive shootout saves to power the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 SO win against the Dallas in their first NHL Prospect Tournament game.

Former Michigan player Kienan Draper, son of assistant general manager Kris Draper, scored Detroit’s lone shootout goal on the team’s eighth attempt. The Red Wings only reached overtime and a shootout because free agent signee Theo Rochette scored with 1:14 left in regulation and Detroit’s goalie pulled.

Augustine has been ranked among the NHL’s best young goalie prospects for the past two seasons. He’s the Red Wings goalie of future, although he will play this in Grand Rapids this season.

Poise and superb positioning are among his chief strengths. That showed in the overtime and shootout.

“I felt a lot better throughout the game,” Augustine said. “I think that’s just because I’m playing hockey again.

There’s nothing like playing games and developing for like younger guys, including myself coming in here. It’s good to get a couple of games in before we head to training camp.”

Finnish prospect Jesse Kiiskinen also scored a power-play goal for Detroit at 8:16 of the second period to tie the game 1-1.

Sutter Muzzatti, the former Notre Dame player acquired from the Nashville Predators, and Carter Bear drew the assists.

What a difference a year has made for 2025 first-round pick Bear, who was coming off an injury last season and couldn’t get going in Detroit’s training camp. He was Detroit’s most visible offensive player in this game, racking up 10 shots on goal.

Noah Dower Nilsson scored with under six minutes left in the third period to pull Detroit within one goal. Theo Rochette scored the tying goal late in the third with the goalie pulled.

Coach Dan Watson said Draper’s GWG was a called shot. “Let’s put it that he told us, “I’ve got the next one guys.’ and he delivered.”.

Former Notre Dame player Muzzazi, son of former NHL goalie Jason Muzzatti, shows some promise. He is a 6-foot-6 forward who kills penalties and offers a net-front presence on the power play.

The Michigan native has offensive instincts. Detroit’s top line at the start of the game was Nate Danielson centering Bear and Kiiskinen.

The Dallas go-ahead goal in the second period was scored by Charlie Paquette, who played for the Red Wings as a free invitee two years ago in this tournament. Then he was drafted by Dallas and played for the Stars in the rookie tournament last year and now this season.

With Augustine pulled, Detroit offseason free-agent addition Theo Rochette sent the game to overtime with a goal with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Danielson and Anton Johansson assisted.

He was a 22-goal scorer in the Swiss League last season. The Red Wings brought him over to determine his AHL/NHL potential.

The Red Wings outshot Dallas 17-4 in the first period, but the Stars outshot them 25-23 the rest of the game

The Detroit rookies play the Penguins rookies at 7 p.m. Sunday at Little Caesars Arena.
