James Hagens Scores Twice, Bruins Prospects Open With Win Over Sabres

The Boston Bruins prospects are in Buffalo for a pair of games against the Buffalo Sabres prospects.

The Bruins opened the Prospects Showcase with a 6-2 win over Buffalo at LECOM Harborcenter on Sunday. Five different Bruins scored, while Max Lundgren picked up his first win in the Spoked B.

It did not take long for the action to get started. Riley Duran played the puck around the boards, and it took a bounce off the stanchion.

Attilio Biasca, crashing toward the net, jumped on the puck and opened the scoring 25 seconds into the game.

Cullen McCrate, the Bruins’ seventh-round pick in the 2026 draft, took a hooking penalty. Dylan Dumont tied the game at the 5:43 mark.

A few minutes later, McCrate drove a shot toward Scott Ratzlaff’s crease. The shot was blocked on its way in, and the puck landed on Dans Locmelis’ stick.

Locmelis, in his first game action since undergoing shoulder surgery in March, buried the loose puck and regained the lead.

The Bruins carried a 2-1 lead into the first intermission and used the first 10 minutes of the second period to extend it.

The Bruins got their first power play of the night in the second period. Cullen McCrate, again, drove a shot on goal.

Nolan Renwick, who signed an AHL contract with the P-Bruins this summer, redirected the puck past Ratzlaff.

The only player with NHL experience got on the board just 76 seconds later. James Hagens made a quiet line change, waited behind the crowd, and picked his spot.

Doman Szongoth added the Sabres’ second power-play goal at the 11:34 mark of the second period to make it 4-2.

Buffalo’s Brayden Holberton knocked Cole Chandler down, and Nolan Renwick retaliated, taking down the Sabres forward. Holberton turned and landed a few punches.

Thomas Zocco, a camp invite from Staten Island, New York, picked his corner in the dying seconds of the second period, giving the Bruins a 5-2 lead as they went back to the locker room.

The Sabres changed goalies ahead of the third period, giving 6-foot-8 goalie Talyn Boyko his first look with the organization.

That didn’t stop the Bruins from scoring, though. James Hagens scored his second goal of the evening on the power play, collecting a feed from Nolan Renwick and finding the top corner.

The Bruins’ power play connected twice on Sunday night, and Hagens’ second goal closed the game’s scoring.

The Bruins and Sabres are back at LECOM Harborcenter Monday afternoon for a game at 12:00 PM. Ryan Johnston of 98.5 The Sports Hub will be on the play-by-play, with Buffalo’s Rob Ray providing color commentary.
