According to Kalshi’s hockey board numbers, 75% of players in the Kalshi prediction say “Yes” to the belief that Larkin is staying in Detroit. But among those believing he will be traded, 72% say it will be to the Minnesota Wild.
The Philadelphia Flyers are the only other team listed with only two percent buying into a “Yes” position. The Kalshi prediction market is a betting platform where people buy and sell shares on the outcome of future events.
The price of a share reflects how likely the crowd thinks that event will occur. Larkin has a no-trade clause.
However, he told the Red Wings he will accept a trade to the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights or Florida Panthers. Mlive.com reported that Larkin would also accept a deal to the Dallas Stars.
But that report is disputed by a Detroit Free Press report that he hasn’t change his list. It’s hard to speculate why someone had placed a wager on a “Yes” for the Philadelphia Flyers, unless it is someone believing he or she has inside knowledge.
Where is The Common Ground? The overwhelming belief in the Wild making a deal work is somewhat odd.
The Red Wings and Wild previously talked without finding common ground. The Red Wings aren’t enamored with the younger players the Wild are willing to give up.
Plus, the Red Wings are looking to land at least one proven player as part of the deal. The only difference now and when the Red Wings and Wild talked is that Steve Yzerman is no longer the team’s general manager.
He is only running the day-to-day operation until a new director of hockey operations is hired. Any optimism about a future Red Wings-Wild deal for Larkin may being fueled by the chance that the new Red Wings regime might be more open to a deal including draft picks and prospects.
Wild Short on Cap Space One issue about a potential Larkin deal is that three original teams on Larkin’s list don’t now have the cap space to fit Larkin’s $8.7 million salary. The Wild will have to move a contract or two, or the Red Wings would have to take a significant contract in the trade.
According to puckpedia.com, the Wild have $1.15 million in cap space remaining. The Panthers only have $34,000 and the Golden Knights are $8.66 million over the cap ceiling.
With no reports of anyone being interviewed or teams giving permission for their employee to be interviewed, it doesn’t appear the Red Wings are deep into the hiring process for the new GM. We know that the team is taking care of some business.
Goalie Carter Gylander recently received a new contract. Plus, Red Wings management attended at the recent Junior Summer Showcase tournament in Windsor.
Red Wings assistant GM Shawn Horcoff is also the Grand Rapids Griffins GM. That team recently signed goalie Jonathan Lemieux to an AHL contract.
Meanwhile, FanDuel Sports has the Red Wings at +235 to make the playoffs. That’s a 29.8% probability.
Each season, five or six teams make the playoffs after missing the season before. But that hasn’t helped the Red Wings for a decade.
