Edvinsson has no idea what the Red Wings Plan to do

You think that you’ve grown weary of waiting for the Detroit Red Wings to hire a GM? Well, imagine how Simon Edvinsson feels.

Detroit’s restricted free agent defenseman wants to get a new contract done. He’s anxious to get down to the business of preparing for the upcoming season.

Here’s the thing, though: Nobody from the Red Wings is talking to him.

Total contract negotiations since Steve Yzerman was ousted as Detroit GM in July?

“It’s been a bit messy because we haven’t had anyone to talk to about the contract,” Edvinsson told Swedish website Aftonbladet. “It would have been nice if a GM or a president came in soon so we could start having some negotiations.”

Yeah, that would be nice. You know, kind of how a professional sports team operates on the eve of the season.

“Otherwise, it’s been good,” Edvinsson said. “I’ve been training well, and I’ve been able to be close to my family.”

Even without a new contract, Edvinsson is planning to attend Red Wings training camp later this month. His agent, J.P.

Barry, is currently working to finalize Edvinsson’s North American visa.

Again, things that teams usually take care of for their players.

Without a contract, Edvinsson will be footing the bill for additional insurance while he comes to camp.

“If something happens that you don’t want, you have to take responsibility for it yourself,” Edvinsson said. “I’ve increased my insurance a little bit extra now.

But you’re driving, and things can happen all the time, so I don’t really think in those terms.

“I just want to be ready for the season.”

If only the team he plays for were offering any indication that they were taking the same approach.

Edvinsson allowed that there were some contract discussions with Yzerman before his dismissal. There have been no further talks since.

Well, at least not with the Red Wings. Edvinsson did acknowledge that there has been “some interest from other clubs” regarding a potential offer sheet.

That’s not something that interests him, though. Even with all the turmoil and uncertainty, he still wants Hockeytown to be his town.

“I love Detroit, and I love the fans,” Edvinsson said. “Detroit is the place closest to my heart, absolutely.

I love everything here. Now you want to have a talk with whoever becomes GM and see what will happen.

“I have an apartment in Detroit and will be there to train. Then we’ll see what happens.

When might that be? Well, your guess is probably as good as his.

“We haven’t negotiated anything,” Edvinsson said. “It’s been pretty quiet for a while now.”
