Alexandre Doucet couldn’t beat the odds. The undrafted former QMJHL league star, signed two years ago by the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent, will now play with Assat Pori in Finland’s Liiga.
Doucet just didn’t earn a place in Detroit’s future plans with his play over three seasons. Even after netting 58 goals in his last season in the “Q” in 2022-23, the odds were not in his favor to stick with the organization. Last season, only 12.5% of NHL players on opening day were undrafted.
He put up 19 goals and 41 points in his first season with the Toledo Walleye but couldn’t sustain that production in two seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 2024-25, he showed seven goals and 21 points and last season he had eight goals and 14 points.
Red Wings Extra
The Grand Rapids Griffins will play two preseason games Saturday, Sept. 26 (1 p.m.) and Sunday, Sept. 27 (3 p.m.) against the Cleveland Monsters in a neutral site matchup at the Huntington Center in Toledo.
That is home to the Toledo Walleye. The preseason games will give Detroit fans a chance to view top prospects such as Trey Augustine, Carter Bear and Anton Johansson, etc. less than an hour from Detroit.
