The Carolina Hurricanes are hanging on to their captain.
Jordan Staal has agreed to a one-year extension with a modest $900k cap hit, the team announced Tuesday. The deal will kick in during the 2027-28 season.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the extension will come with a $4 million signing bonus and contains up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses.
"Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization," said Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky."His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh."
Staal is coming off a championship run with the Hurricanes that saw him take home the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He finished the regular season with 20 goals and 36 points in 75 games before following it up with eight goals and 12 points in the post-season.
The Thunder Bay, Ont., native is entering the final season of a four-year contract with the Hurricanes that is paying him $2.97 million per season.
The 38-year-old was a second-overall pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 NHL Draft, winning his first Stanley Cup three years later with the franchise in 2009. Staal was traded to the Hurricanes at the 2012 NHL Draft and has since spent the past 14 seasons in Carolina.
Throughout 1,408 games and 20 seasons in the NHL, Staal has 318 goals and 747 points in his career.
