The 2022-23 Boston Bruins set a league record with 65 wins. Only six players remain from that team just three years later, and one of them just came back in July.
David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, Pavel Zacha, Hampus Lindholm, and Jeremy Swayman have been with the black and gold since the record-setting season, with Pastrnak as the longest-tenured player on the roster. Connor Clifton, after three years away, will return to TD Garden ice wearing the spoked-B this fall.
That leaves a long list of players who are no longer in Boston.
To start, Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci hung up their skates after the season.
Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov, and Garnet Hathaway were all acquired at the trade deadline, and all walked in free agency that July. Bertuzzi landed in Toronto on a one-year deal, was knocked out of the playoffs by the Bruins, then signed a four-year deal in Chicago.
He finished last season with a career-high 32 goals. Orlov went to Carolina for two years before landing in San Jose, and he also set career highs with 37 points (3-34–37) last season.
Hathaway, after a few seasons in Philadelphia, was traded to Florida this summer.
Don Sweeney used a buyout on defenseman Mike Reilly, who moved around and now has his name on the Stanley Cup. He landed in Florida, was placed on waivers, and claimed by the Islanders.
Then Carolina brought him in on a one-year deal, and he had nine points (1-8–9) in 42 regular-season games. Reilly is currently a free agent.
The Bruins, who were strapped for cash that summer, unloaded both Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Chicago Blackhawks for two depth options that are no longer with the Bruins. Hall and Foligno are no longer in Chicago.
Hall, like Reilly, won the Stanley Cup this summer with the Carolina Hurricanes, and he had the most points (18-30–48) in a single season since the 2021-22 season in Boston. Foligno was traded to Minnesota at the 2026 trade deadline, joining forces with brother Marcus, and he re-upped on a one-year deal with the Wild this summer.
The Bruins also lost AJ Greer to waivers before the start of the 2023-24 season. He went from Calgary to Florida, won a Cup, then shattered his career highs with 32 points (17-15–32).
He signed a big ticket (4x$4.25M) with Anaheim this summer.
Linus Ullmark was traded to Ottawa ahead of the 2024 draft and signed a four-year extension shortly after the 2024-25 season started. The Senators had long been searching for their No. 1 goalie, and while Ullmark’s numbers have not kept up with his Vezina Trophy-winning season in Boston, he has helped the Senators reach the playoffs twice.
The Bruins also lost Jake DeBrusk and Derek Forbort to the Vancouver Canucks in free agency. It was the same day the Bruins added former Canucks Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm.
DeBrusk has continued to be a 20-goal scorer for the Canucks, doing it in both seasons, but primarily due to his power play time. DeBrusk scored just four goals away from the power play last season.
He’s also been in trade rumors yet again. Forbort only dressed for two games during the 2025-26 season, missing the rest of it due to hip issues and a poor reaction to a PRP injection.
Matt Grzelcyk appeared to find a home after signing in Pittsburgh for the 2024-25 season, and he set a career high with 39 assists while playing a good amount of time alongside Kris Letang. They did not keep him, though, and it took a while, but the Blackhawks offered the Charlestown native a PTO ahead of last season.
He made the team, but finished with 12 assists and is now searching for a new home for the upcoming campaign.
Tomas Nosek, Jakub Lauko, and Jakub Zboril all left at different times, but now are all playing in Czechia. Zboril is with HC Vítkovice, his second season with the club, while Lauko and Nosek will be teammates on HC Dynamo Pardubice this season.
And then there was the 2025 trade deadline.
The first player from the 2022-23 team to go around the deadline was former first-round pick Trent Frederic. The Oilers traded for Frederic.
He played in one regular-season game and 22 playoff games (1-3–4), then signed a whopping eight-year deal ($3.85M AAV). The St. Louis native finished with just seven points in 74 games, a far cry from the 31 and 40 he posted in Boston.
Then the Bruins parted with Charlie Coyle. The Weymouth native landed in Colorado for their playoff run, but was shipped to Columbus with Miles Wood that summer.
He found a fit in Columbus, finishing last season with 58 points (20-38–58) before signing a six-year extension ($6M AAV).
The biggest gut punch came just a few minutes before the 3:00 PM ET deadline, and it was when Don Sweeney shipped Brad Marchand to Florida. The most recent Bruins’ captain lifted the Stanley Cup, then signed a six-year deal ($5.25M AAV) last summer that keeps him under contract until he’s 43 years old.
The Panthers missed the playoffs last season, but Marchand’s level of play did not drop. He finished over a point per game (1.04 PPG) and was second on the Panthers’ roster with 27 goals.
Also just before the bell, the Bruins traded Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a haul. Carlo lasted two seasons in Toronto, finishing with 10 assists in 75 regular-season games before being traded to St. Louis for two third-round picks.
He will reunite with ex-bench boss Jim Montgomery in his new home.
There were more players who played during the 2022-23 season, like Craig Smith, who was traded at the deadline. He announced his retirement in December 2025.
Keith Kinkaid, also traded at the deadline, is a goalie coach on Long Island. Anton Stralman made the team off a PTO and played in eight games.
He also retired.
Marc McLaughlin was also traded at the 2025 trade deadline, and he’s still under contract with the Devils. Vinni Lettieri is with the Maple Leafs, and he spent the entire 2025-26 season in the AHL.
Walpole native Chris Wagner is not too far away, as he’s the captain for the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds. Jack Studnicka is with the Flyers organization after spending last season between Florida and Charlotte.
More depth options landed in Europe. Oskar Steen has been playing for Färjestad BK in Sweden, and Joona Koppanen is with Luleå HF.
Dan Renouf is playing in Germany, and Connor Carrick last played in Switzerland, but mutually agreed to part ways with HC Lugano after this past season.
