The Detroit Red Wings still don’t have a general manager, but they have one less candidate for the job.
An NHL source tells Detroit Hockey Now that Jeff Greenberg, the GM of the MLB Detroit Tigers, is withdrawing his name from consideration for the position. According to the source, Greenberg informed Tigers beat writers of his decision via group text.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman also confirmed Greenberg’s decision on social media.

The Ilitch family owns both the Red Wings and the Tigers.
Greenberg, 40, has served as GM of the Tigers since 2023. He does have NHL front office experience.
In 2022, he was hired as assistant GM of the Chicago Blackhawks.
From Pittsburgh, Greenberg’s first pro sports job was as an intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates and later the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2012, Greenberg was hired by the Chicago Cubs as an intern in the club’s baseball operations department.
The Cubs promoted him to director of baseball operations in 2018, and then director of professional scouting in 2019. The following year, Greenberg was named assistant GM of the Cubs.
He held that role until moving over to the Blackhawks in a similar position.
What Next For The Red Wings?
There was speculation that the Red Wings would be naming a GM by Labor Day, but time is running out on that possibility.
With Greenberg’s withdrawal, the other name that’s being floated in rumors is Florida Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson. Peterson joined the Panthers in his current role in 2020 to become the NHL’s first Black assistant general manager.
Peterson does have a bit of a history with the Red Wings organization. As a player, in 2008-09, he suited up for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s top farm club.
Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch is reportedly seeking someone to run the team’s hockey operations with an analytics background.
